Full-bodied Spring

If you ask any respected chef or sommelier in Australia’s fine dining scene where to source the best produce, Beechworth and Rutherglen are two names always on the top of the list.

Just look at Attica’s wine list, Australia’s most revered restaurant. Gourmet Traveller 2019 Sommelier of the Year finalist and head sommelier at Attica, Jane Lopes, presents a comprehensive assortment of both Beechworth and Rutherglen wine. Anyone with a bit of fine wine knowledge will easily recognise names like Giaconda and Saveterre, with their prized cool climate chardonnay, as well as generational Rutherglen vineyards Chambers and All Saints Estate, who have gained an international following for their exceptional Muscat. New comers like Vigneron Schmölzer & Brown and Scion are also making their mark within the region, heralding respect from both the local vignerons and the Australian wine industry at large.

The High Country further prides itself on a plentiful food basket, with an ideal Mediterranean climate (wet and cold winters, hot and dry summers). The region is best known for producing premium spring lamb and slow maturing grass-fed beef on the river flats of the Murray River.

Every producer has a personal story of how they grow and connect to their food, either encapsulating generational knowledge (some that stems back seven generations), or bringing innovation and a passion for the industry with them.

All of this converges with an offering of fine dining restaurants focusing on sourcing local food and wine – why would they go anywhere else?
